Kozhikode, popularly known as Calicut is considered as the most important area of Malabar in yester years, a prominent trade and commerce center and also was the capital of the powerful Zamorins. Kozhikode District was the first region to explore the Sea Route to India in 1498 by the Portuguese Navigator Vasco Da Gama. Vasco Da Gama landed at the Kappad sea shore with three vessels and 170 men. A memorial was also built here to memorialize the historical landing, which still exists.


The land of perfect beaches with pungent spice gardens, pictorial country sides and with all the Kozhikode also hosts warm people. The city can be traced from 27th May, 1948 when the coastal town of Kozhikode rose to fame with the feet of Vasco Da Gama happened to fall on its shores. A trip to the palace tank of King Mana Vikrama called Mananchira can be exciting one displaying its traditional architecture. The palace tank has a musical fountain and is encircled with greenery and ethnic buildings.
