Alleppey also known as Alappuzha in Malayalam is a city in Alappuzha District of the province of Kerala state and a part of southern India. It is the administrative headquarters of Alappuzha District.
This town is deemed to be the first and the oldest planned town in this whole province. According to the 2001 census Alleppey stands as the sixth largest city in Kerala with an estimated population of 177,029.
Alleppey is also considered as the “Venice of east” for its abundant waterways. This vast network of lagoons, canals, and lakes happen to be the lifeline of Alleppey. The city was founded in the year 1762 by Divan of Travanacore, Raja Keshawadasan. This untouched back water town is bordered with numerous coconut palms lining the waterways.
During the 18th century Alleppey was one of the busiest trade centers and used to have an excellent port along with the Malabar Coast. British then announced the place to be as the trade port. At present, Alleppey is the center for prawn farming and coir carpet industries. The town was discovered on a narrow land spattered between Arabian Sea and Vembanad Lake.
