Davangere, also spelled as Davanagere is situated in the Indian state of Karnataka, which happens to be in the western part of South India. It is the administrative headquarters of the district of Davangere, which locates at the heart of the state of Karnataka. The city stands as the 7th largest city in the state and is positioned on the National Highway 4 (India), making a distance of 265 km from the state capital, Bangalore.


The town of Davanagere became a separate district in 1997. It is believed that the town Davanagere took its name from the phrase Davana Kere, which literally means “Village of Lake”. The city has a rich history and culture as it was included in the province of Nolambavady , which was then under the reign of the Chalukya Kings. Nestled at the foothills of the Western Ghats and it known for its cotton mills and is a fast developing city of Karnataka with its thriving textile center. The town is also referred to as the Manchester of Karnataka or the textile capital of South India.

In its close proximity there stands a place called Shamanur, which is famous for Sri Anjaneya Swamy temple. Other attractions in the region are Soole kere (Shanthi Sagara), Anekonda and Santhebennur.
