Belgaum is also called by a name Belagavi in Kannada and Belgaon in Marathi, is located in the district of Belgaum, which is also a municipal corporation in the Indian state of Karnataka. The city stands as the fourth largest city in the entire state of Karnataka, after Bengaluru, Hubli-Dharwad, and Mysore.
The district of Belgaum is erected at an altitude of 762 m above the sea level and is bordered with the state of Maharashtra with its famous city Goa as lying between them. It is also the headquarters of the Belgaum Division, which encompasses the following districts such as Bagalkot, Belgaum, Bijapur, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, and Uttara Kannada.
The city has been proposed by the government for making it as the second capital of the state of Karnataka and also possesses an upcoming second state administrative building Suvarna Vidhana Soudha.
Belgaum is one of the oldest cities in the state of Karnataka. It lies at a distance of about 504 km from Bangalore, 550 km from Mumbai, 159 km from Panaji and 336 km from Pune. Since Belgaum is located in between Maharashtra and Goa, the place has acquired a unique culture and heritage of its own.
According to the archaeological research, it is believed that Belgaum was once known as Venugrama Bamboo village and was a branch of the Chalukya Empire in the period lying between the 6th and 8th century AD. The town of Belgaum was built and brought out during the period of 12th century by the rulers of the region, Rattas.
The Rattas who used to control the town of Belgaum later on passed to the Yadavas of Devangiri, which was later on ruled by the great Vijaynagar Kingdom. Then in the 15th century, Belgaum was conquered by the Bahamani rulers from Deccan. The fort of Belgaum was built by the Rattas and was renovated by the Bahamani rulers and also added several new monuments like Safa Masjid and Jamia Masjid to the city. Then in 1686, the territory was under the reign of Aurangzeb.
The city of Belgaum had also played a key role in the Indian Freedom Movement. It is also recognized as ‘Malendu’, the Rain Country. The town nestles at the foothills of the Western Ghats which provides greenery to the region.
