Originally referred as Sakchi, but later on in 1919 Lord Chelmsford named it as Jamshedpur after a renowned industrialist Jamshetji Nusserwanji Tata, for paying a tribute to the founder and the owner of the tata steel. It was also known by a name called Tatanagar. It is also acclaimed as the first cosmopolitan city of the country.

Jamshedpur, also called as steel city, is a flourishing industrial city with other major industries together with that of iron and steel, tin plate production, cement production and truck manufacturing. The city also possesses many medium and small scale industries.


Jamshedpur is all incorporated with many mineral resources such as coal, iron ore, lime, manganese and bauxite making it as the city having the highest per capita income in India.


The city has been attributed with the first integrated iron and steel factory which was established by Jamshedji Tata in 1908. XLRI, India’s premier business school, nestles in the heart of Jamshedpur city.
