Dhanbad, the Coal Capital of India is deemed to be the 79th fastest budding city across the world and is ranked as the 35th city in the Indian sub-continent possessing more than 1 million of population. The city also holds its second position in having the size of its Rail Division of Indian Railway, when talking about its revenue production. The city stands as one of the most important cities of Jharkhand; which is positioned on the Chota Nagpur Plateau at a distance of about 168 km from the state capital, Ranchi.


The place is also acknowledged for coal mining and other industries. Dhanbad is an abode to some of the biggest coal mining industries such as IISCO, BCCL, Tata Steel and ECL. There are other industries as well like coke making and coal washing industries that are found in the city giving a boost to the country’s economy.


Dhanbad coalfields are commonly known as Jharia coalfields, which are sprawled over an area of 448 km having a total reserve of coal being 5,000 million tons. Jharia is placed at a very little distance to Dhanbad, taken as a distinct town at the administrative level. Dhanbad also houses the 1050 MW Thermal power plant by DVC along with Tata Power. The town is also the headquarters of Dhanbad District in Jharkhand. The city was once a part of the Manbhum District of West Bengal till 25th October, 1956.
