Mapusa, pronounced as Mapsa by the local people of the area, the town stands as the third largest town in the state and is also the capital of the northern Bardez Taluka. The town lies in the district of North Goa and also serves as the headquarters of the Bardez Taluka. During the time when the town was under the influence of Portuguese, the name of the town used to be spelt as Mapuçá.


The town of Mapusa is erected at an elevation of about 15 m above the sea level and is just at a distance of about 13 km from the north of the state capital, Panaji. Being located on the NH 17, the town is also connected with the road which takes it to Kochi and Mumbai.


It is believed that the name of the city has been derived from the Konkan word, map which stands for measure and sa defines as fill up. Mapusa marks its main claim to fame with its well-known Friday market. The town has developed into a commercial centre with a blend of residential areas and large gardens. Along with it the town has other excursions also that interest the tourists.

The historical town of Mapusa has many things to offer to its tourists. Some of the famous beaches which are situated in and around the town of Mapusa are Calangute, Anjuna, Vagator, Sinquerim and Baga. There are some of the religious places that also attract the tourists are Sri Kalika temple and Sri Morjee temple, Church of St. Jerome, St. Francis Xavier, Basilica of Bom Jesus and Church of Our Lady of Rosary. St. Francis Xavier has also been declared as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO.Another attraction in the area is the Mascarenhas Mansion, showcasing the beautiful Portuguese architectural style.


The town also offers opportunities of the adventure activities like like paragliding, parasailing, banana boat ride and surfing. Then there is a famous Friday Market that is one of the most attractive things in the town.


Climate of Mapusa

The town of Mapusa experiences a salubrious kind of a climate all across the year. Here, summers are hot but the cool breezes make it quite bearable and in the month of June the south west monsoon arrives and remain here till the last week of September. Then the winter season arrives in the month of December which takes its place till February.

Mapusa by Rail: The nearest railway station is at Mapusa Road, Shivim railway station, which is just at a distance of about 12 km from the north of the town.
