Darbhanga also recognized as the twin city is a municipal corporation, standing as one of the most important cities of Northern Bihar and is positioned in the heart of Mithilanchal. Till 1875, the district of Darbhanga was a part of Sarkar Tirhut after which it stood as a separated district. It is the capital city of the district and the division of Darbhanga.


The city got its name from the Royal Darbhanga Family, who were one of the richest landlords during the British Rule. It is also said that the name of the city was discovered by an individual named Darbhangi Khan. It is also believed that the name of the city derived from the word Dwar-Banga also recognized as Dar-e-Bang, which means “The Gateway to Bengal”.


Lying on the Gangetic Plains in northern part of India, the city is just at a drive of 50 km away from the neighboring city of Nepal. The city is comprised of huge population of which 91.30% of people belong to the rural area, many of which live below the poverty line.


Since centuries, Darbhanga is regarded as the cultural capital of Bihar with its rich musical, folk-art and literary background.
