Bhagalpur is positioned on the plains of the Ganga river basin at an elevation of about 141 feet above sea level in the Indian state of Bihar. Sprawling over an area of around 2569.50 sq km, the city has been honored with several sobriquets such as the second largest city of the state, the silk city, 120th fastest growing city in the world and the 20th fastest growing city in India by City Mayors Foundation. Known as the “Silk City” of India, the city contributes in the production of Tussah or Tussar and Silk.


The city is also the administrative headquarters of the district. The city is among the old cities and some of the references date back to the 7th century. The city has witnessed the authority of many rulers and was known to be an established trading market in the 7th century. The city was also known by a name of Champanagar.


It is believed that the former name of the Bhagalpur city was ‘Bhagdattpuram’ which literally means ‘the City of Good luck’ as mentioned in the epics of Mahabharatha and Ramayana. The main language of the city is Angika named after the Anga kingdom. There are many places to visit in Bhagalpur such as Lajpat Park, Shiva Temple at Budanath, Champagnagar Jain Temple, Ghanta Ghar, Dargah of Guran Baba, Rabindra Nath Bhavan, Tegh Bahadur Gurudwara, Sandish Compound, Temple of Goddess Kali and Durga, Rajmahal Fossil Sanctuary and Sanjay Udyan Park.


Other attractions of the city are its festivals that are celebrated with grandeur which includes Laxmi Puja, Kali Puja, Chath Puja and Dussehra. Muharram, the Muslim festival is also celebrated with great splendor.


Another historical attraction in the city of Bhagalpur is Vikramasila, which is situated at the Patharghat Hills on the banks of the River Ganga can be seen about 40 km away from Bhagalpur. The mythological spot in the city are the Madar hills and is also considered as the sacred place for the fact that it is believed to be the place where the ‘Sagar Manthan’ or can say as the spot where the Churning of the ocean by the Devas and Asuras took place.


Madhusudan Temple, Shiva Mandir and Masjid located on the hill are also a source of attraction at the place. Chandan Dam, Colganj, The Burh Nath temple are some other tourist destinations in the city.

The city experiences tropical kind of climate having mild temperatures in winters as making the winter season quite pleasant and cool. Bhagalpur by Air: The nearest domestic airport to the city is at the state capital Patna, which is situated at a distance of 235 km from the city and connects the city with the major cities of the country.


Bhagalpur by Rail: The city has its own railhead, which is one of the oldest railway junction in the country serving theHawrah-Kiqel loop-Line. The city is positioned on the broad-gauge Loop Line of Eastern Railway, connecting Kiul to Burdwan.


Bhagalpur by Road: Bhagalpur has a well organized network of roadways connected it to the national as well as state highways, along with district and rural roads. NH 31runs through the Navgachia Sub-Division of Bhagalpur district.
