The district of Tawang which lies in the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh stands as the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama. Twang also is one of the 16 administrative districts of the state and is stretched over a territory of about 2,085 sq km.


The region where the district lies is historically recognized as the Tibetan territory and has been claimed as a part of china as South Tibet. It is also popularly known as the eighth least populous district in the country of India.


This beautiful destination stands at an elevation of about 10,000 ft above the sea level and is also recognized as the land of the Monpa Tribe. The district of Tawang shares its borders with Tibet in its north, Bhutan in its south-west and Sela Range in its east.


It is said that the name of the district has been derived from one of the oldest and the largest Buddhist monasteries of India, which is known as the Tawang Monastery. The Tawang Monastery is an important learning centre of Buddhists, which is situated here in the area. It is believed that the monastery dates back to 400 years ago, when it used to be the home to around 700 monks. This monastery was founded in 1681 by Merag Lama Lodre Gyatso in compliance with 5th Dalai Lama, Nagwang Lobsang Gyatso.


The word Tawang has its meaning with its split words such as Ta which means horse and Wang which defines as chosen and therby it is believed that the monastery had been chosen by the horse. This beautiful district which holds great history has many attractions such as its mountain views, beautiful monasteries along with its lakes that are numbered to around 100 makes the place as the most sought after tourist destination in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. Some of the important festivals celebrated in Tawang are Losar, Torgya, Choekor and Dupka Tse-She. Another festival which is celebrated by particular tribes is the Losar Festival, one of the most important festivals in Tawang, is celebrated by the Monpa community.


Other attractions are Golden Namgyal Lhatse, Regyaling Gompa, Urgelling Gompa and Gyangong Ani Gompa, Brahma-dung-chung Ani Gompa and Singsor Ani Gompa, Sela Pass, Tawang War Memorial and Jaswant Ghar. Some of the famous lakes in the district are Pangang Teng Tso Lake, Shonga-tser Lake and Banga Jang Lake. The famous mountain ranges in the district are Ghesila Range and Gorichen Peak and these are ideal locations for trekking and rock climbing. Some of the beautiful waterfalls of Tawang are BongBong Waterfall and Bap Teng Kang Waterfall.

The district possess temperate type of climate almost all the year, yet the best months to visit the place is in the months from March till June.


How to reach Tawang

Tawang by Air: The nearest airport is at Tezpur in Assam, which is at a distance of about 365 km from the place and has direct flights to Kolkata which ply twice a week.


Tawang by Rail: The nearest railhead is at Guwahati at a distance of about 555 km, which is connected to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore.


Tawang by Road: Tawang can be reached from Bomdila which is 185 km away, Tezpur, which is situated at a distance of about 365 km and Guwahati which is just 555 km away and can be reached through the Sila Pass.
