Guntur, the city situated in the north eastern part of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, is the fourth largest city (by population) and the third largest city (by area) in the state. It is a municipal corporation in the state. Moreover, the city stands with the sixth position in the country as has been sprawled over an area of 11,391 sq km, including both rural and urban area.
The city took its name from the words like gundu (a rock), gunta (a pond) and kunta (1/3 of an acre). The city is flanked by the district of Krishna and the Bay of Bengal on its eastern side, the district f Prakaam on its southern side, the district of Mahabubnagar on its western side and the district of Nalgonda on its northern side. The district of Gantur also permits the rivers including the River Krishna, River Chandravanka, River Naagileru and River Gundla Kamma to traverse through it.
The city is thought to be founded by the French in the 8th century, but later on in 1788, these French people surrendered the city to the British. The district of Gantur lies on the Vijayawada-Madras Trunk Road

Climate of Guntur The climate of Gantur is hot and wet in summers and is dry and pleasant in winters. The city remains hot and warm almost all the year, including the monsoon which arrives on the scene in the month of June with the showers of about 90 cm, on an average. Then the winters starts from the month of November which gives a sigh of relief to the town.
