Rameshwaram is a sanctified island stationed at the mainland hemmed in by Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar anchored with the longest ever constructed bridge on sea in the country. It is one of the most popular pilgrim centres, lying in the Southern part of India.


The serene beach of Rameshwaram provides an opportunity to dive into its shallow waters and is a perfect site for sunbathing. It also renders the visitors to have an enjoyable sight of dolphins into the water.


According to the legends, it is believed that the Hindu God, Lord Sri Rama, the hero of the epic, Ramayanam, here at the place worshipped Lord Siva before invading Lanka to escape his wife Sita from the clutches of Ravana. It is from here that Sri Rama constructed the mythological bridge (longest ever bridge on sea) up till the island of Sri Lanka.


The sea is an abode to rare sea species and coral reefs with a variety of marine life-algae, starfish, sea cucumber, crabs, sponges and the sea cow are found here.


The main attraction of Rameshwaram Beach is Ramnathswamy temple which was constructed in the 17th century. The temple bears a close proximity to the sea and is situated on its eastern side. This time-honored temple is famous for having 1200 colossal granite columns.


Thetemple is sprawled over an area of 151 acres and stands as a glorious paradigm of Dravidian art. It is believed that the temple took about 350 years in having its final touch. The corridors and other vast structures of the temple and the Gopurams were built by the Sethupathis, rulers of Ramanathapuram since 12th century.


The temple has two Gopurams at the eastern and western entrances, 130 feet and 80 feet high, respectively. The 54 meter tall gate tower is called as gopuram, is another attraction that grabs the interest with its magnificence. The sanctum sanctorum is built of polished granite stone.


Another attraction in the area is Agnitheertham, which is at a distance of about 100 meters from the temple, where Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva, to absolve himself from the killing Ravana. Rameshwaram beach promises to convince both pilgrims and tourists alike.
