Karaikal is a prehistoric temple town positioned with the length of the eastern coast of the Union Territory of Pondicherry in India. It is one of the popular and a favorite destination among the tourists as well as is admired by the pilgrims. Nestled on the Koramandel coast of the Bay of Bengal, Karaikal possesses a distance of about 300 km from the south of Chennai and 135 km from Pondicherry.
Karaikal is positioned on the delta of the River Cauvery and is the second largest hill station of all the four regions in the Union Territory of Pondicherry. Karaikal is surrounded by Nagappattinam and Thiruvarur Districts, which are from the southern State of India, Tamil Nadu.
Karaikal town is at about 16 km from the north of Nagappattinam and 12 km from south of Tarangambadi and is the regional headquarters. Karaikal region is comprised of the communities of Karaikal, kottucherry, Nedungadu, Tirunallar, neravy and Tirumalarajanpattinam.
Karaikal displays rich cultural and religious history. This place has been declared in the prehistoric texts of Nayanmars and Alwars. Initially, Karaikal was known with the name Karaigiri, the phrase is from Sanskrit, which came from two words Karai and Kal. The town had witnessed the reign of the Pallava dynasty during the 8th century AD. The town is also known through Sekkizhar, a legendary poet of the early 11th century, as he has mentioned about the town of Karaikal in his Peria puranam.
The place is famous for its religious monuments like Karaikal Ammaiyar Temple, Lord Saneeswara Temple at Thirunallar, Sri Dharbarenyeswaraswamy Temple, Badrakaliyamman Temple, Ayiramkaliyamman Temple, etc. as these make prime pilgrim centres in Karaikal. Best time to visit Karaikal is during winters between November and February.
