Kalpeni holds one of the largest lagoons in Lakshadweep archipelago. It is a shallow isle, offering splendid opportunities for water sports and activities. Kalpeni atoll possesses a great storm bank of corals. This is the result of the devastating storm of 1847 that threw up huge rocks and due which; Kalpeni marks the distinction of not being a beach. It is believed that the storm of 1847 reshaped the Kalpeni Island. Since ages, Kalpeni has been an important island of Lakshadweep.

The place has an unexplored Moinnuddeen Mosque which lies on the southernmost shore of Kalpeni. The mosque is named after a famous Lakshadweep saint. Kalpeni stands as the first island in the very Union Territory where women were allowed to go to school and get an education.
