The mausoleum of the Mughal Emperor Akbar is situated at Sikandra, which is the suburb region of Agra and is undoubtedly the most inimitable among the mausoleums in the entire Asia. The tomb stands on the Agra-Mathura road on National Highway No. 2.
The construction of this beautiful memorial was initiated by Akbar himself in the year 1602 A.D. and when it was in the mid-way process the Mughal King Akbar died and after that the king’s son Jahangir got it complete in the year1613 A.D, which indulged Rs. 1.5 million. The tomb of the king Akbar represents and displays his philosophies and secular attitude. The composition makes a perfect blend of Hindu, Christian, Islamic, Buddhist, Jain motifs.
Later, Jahangir made many modifications in the original sketch of the structure. The structure reveals a perfect reflection of the Mughal Art which can also be observed from the Humayuns tomb in Delhi to Akbars Tomb in Sikandra finally to the Taj Mahal.
The fort occupies the exact area of 690 sq m and is connected with the points of the compass, enclosed by walls, along with a large garden known as Bahishtabad in a classic charbagh garden style. There is a gatehouse at the center of each wall with broad paved avenues, which are created out in Mughal style with central running water canals representing the paradise of four rivers, leading towards the tomb at the center of the square. The structures here are mainly created out of deep red sandstone, with some imprints of white marble. Having the imprints of white marbles, the tomb and the main gate are also adorned with black slate. The decorations and designs are all in different patterns such as geometric, floral and calligraphic and prefiguring of the more intricate designs which were later inlaid in Itmad-ud-Daulahs Tomb as well.
